Benton is a city located in Marshall County, Kentucky. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 4,197. It is the county seat of Marshall CountyTemplate:GR.

Shape-note singers gather annually at Benton on the fourth Sunday in May to sing from a tunebook called The Southern Harmony. This event, organized in 1884 and called The Big Singing or Big Singing Day, is considered by many to be the oldest indigenous musical tradition in the United States.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²). 10.2 km² (3.9 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 4,197 people, 1,767 households, and 1,111 families residing in the city. The population density is 411.3/km² (1,065.3/mi²). There are 1,922 housing units at an average density of 188.3/km² (487.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.97% White, 0.62% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.55% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,767 households out of which 24.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.7% are married couples living together, 10.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 37.1% are non-families. 35.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 21.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.19 and the average family size is 2.80.

In the city the population is spread out with 19.1% under the age of 18, 9.0% from 18 to 24, 24.9% from 25 to 44, 21.8% from 45 to 64, and 25.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 85.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $35,250, and the median income for a family is $52,396. Males have a median income of $39,097 versus $22,134 for females. The per capita income for the city is $18,660. 10.8% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.6% of those under the age of 18 and 8.4% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
