CBC Newsworld

From Academic Kids

CBC Newsworld is a 24-hour cable television news channel operated by the CBC. It is available to cable subscribers across the country and broadcasts into over 10 million homes nation-wide, as well as into some northern states in the U.S. It is the world's third-oldest television service of this nature, after CNN in the United States and Sky News in the United Kingdom.

The channel initially began broadcasting on July 31, 1989, and it originally broadcast from studios in Halifax, Toronto, Winnipeg and Calgary, reflecting the coast-to-coast nature of the service. Budget cuts over the years eventually forced CBC Newsworld to centralize most of its operations in Toronto and Calgary.

Unlike the CBC's main television network, which is publicly funded by Canadian tax payers, Newsworld is funded by commercial advertising and cable subscriber fees.

Its French counterpart is Réseau de l'information (RDI), run by the CBC's French arm, Radio-Canada.

Newsworld originally aired a number of magazine-style programs, along with hourly news updates. In recent years, the network has moved from that style of programming to focussing solely on live news programs and documentary programs. Several of Newsworld's programs also air on the main CBC Television Network, which is available to most Canadians who own a television and antenna. The national morning program, CBC News: Morning airs on the main CBC TV network from 6 - 7 a.m. local time. On Newsworld, the program airs from 6 a.m. eastern standard time to 10:30 a.m. EST. CBC's midday newscast, CBC News: Today airs from noon to 12:30 on CBC TV, and hourly for 30 minutes on CBC Newsworld. CBC Television News's flaghship early supper hour newscast Canada Now and it's primetime national newscast The National also air on CBC Newsworld.

Some of CBC Newsworld's programming also airs on Newsworld International, a US owned and operated cable news network. However, CBC Newsworld also produces some programming for Newsworld International, and schedules programming from other news networks, which does not air on the Canadian channel. Newsworld International was originally owned and operated by the CBC. Newsworld International was sold to Vivendi Universal in 2000, and sold again to Al Gore and Joel Hyatt in 2004 Newsworld will continue to provide for the network's programming until the Gore and Hyatt launch their own network, Current TV, on August 1, 2005.

Newsworld also carries some news and lifestyle programming from BBC World.
