Carlisle is a town located in Sullivan County, Indiana. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,660.

Geography

Carlisle is located at 38°57'44" North, 87°24'2" West (38.962240, -87.400691)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²). 1.4 km² (0.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 2,660 people, 286 households, and 193 families residing in the town. The population density is 1,901.9/km² (4,953.5/mi²). There are 322 housing units at an average density of 230.2/km² (599.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the town is 63.68% White, 32.26% African American, 0.90% Native American, 0.08% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 1.58% from other races, and 1.50% from two or more races. 2.14% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 286 households out of which 32.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% are married couples living together, 12.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% are non-families. 30.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the town the population is spread out with 7.0% under the age of 18, 17.9% from 18 to 24, 53.9% from 25 to 44, 16.2% from 45 to 64, and 5.0% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 603.7 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 756.1 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $29,875, and the median income for a family is $36,250. Males have a median income of $28,207 versus $20,682 for females. The per capita income for the town is $12,822. 13.4% of the population and 12.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.5% of those under the age of 18 and 9.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
