Clark County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 4,143. Its county seat is Clark6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,507 km² (968 mi²). 2,481 km² (958 mi²) of it is land and 26 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.02% water.

The county is divided into twenty-seven townships: Ash, Blaine, Collins, Cottonwood, Darlington, Day, Eden, Elrod, Fordham, Foxton, Garfield, Hague, Lake, Lincoln, Logan, Maydell, Merton, Mount Pleasant, Pleasant, Raymond, Richland, Rosedale, Spring Valley, Thorp, Warren, Washington, and Woodland.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,143 people, 1,598 households, and 1,110 families residing in the county. The population density is 2/km² (4/mi²). There are 1,880 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.65% White, 0.07% Black or African American, 0.60% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.19% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,598 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.60% are married couples living together, 4.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.50% are non-families. 28.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 16.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.14.

In the county, the population is spread out with 27.00% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 22.00% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 22.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 97.40 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.40 males.
