According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²). 2.4 km² (0.9 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.00% water.

Eureka has been assigned the ZIP code 57437 and the FIPS place code 20180.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,101 people, 528 households, and 296 families residing in the city. The population density is 457.1/km² (1,178.5/mi²). There are 625 housing units at an average density of 259.5/km² (669.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 99.00% White, 0.00% African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 0.36% from two or more races. 0.00% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 528 households out of which 15.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.6% are married couples living together, 3.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.9% are non-families. 41.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 29.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 1.96 and the average family size is 2.64.

In the city the population is spread out with 15.5% under the age of 18, 4.4% from 18 to 24, 14.7% from 25 to 44, 20.0% from 45 to 64, and 45.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 61 years. For every 100 females there are 81.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 80.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $19,826, and the median income for a family is $30,956. Males have a median income of $23,194 versus $17,000 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,379. 15.9% of the population and 11.4% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 6.5% of those under the age of 18 and 22.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
