Hancock County is a county located in the state of Indiana. As of 2000, the population is 55,391. The county's county seat is Greenfield, Indiana6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 794 km² (307 mi²). 793 km² (306 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.20% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 55,391 people, 20,718 households, and 16,160 families residing in the county. The population density is 70/km² (181/mi²). There are 21,750 housing units at an average density of 27/km² (71/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.44% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.37% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.23% from other races, and 0.62% from two or more races. 0.95% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 20,718 households out of which 36.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 67.50% are married couples living together, 7.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 22.00% are non-families. 18.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 7.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county the population is spread out with 26.50% under the age of 18, 6.80% from 18 to 24, 30.00% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 11.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 97.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $56,416, and the median income for a family is $63,083. Males have a median income of $44,001 versus $28,562 for females. The per capita income for the county is $24,966. 3.00% of the population and 1.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 2.80% of those under the age of 18 and 5.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
