Highland Falls is a village located in Orange County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 3,678.

Highland Falls is in the Town of Highlands and is adjacent to the United States Military Academy at West Point.

Geography

Highland Falls is located at 41°22'7" North, 73°58'5" West (41.368527, -73.968072)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²). 2.9 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is land and 0.89% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,678 people, 1,567 households, and 922 families residing in the village. The population density is 1,279.4/km² (3,326.4/mi²). There are 1,657 housing units at an average density of 576.4/km² (1,498.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 76.94% White, 12.75% African American, 0.38% Native American, 2.18% Asian, 0.19% Pacific Islander, 3.78% from other races, and 3.78% from two or more races. 10.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,567 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.6% are married couples living together, 12.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.1% are non-families. 35.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.4% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.35 and the average family size is 3.13.

In the village the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 7.1% from 18 to 24, 30.6% from 25 to 44, 22.6% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 95.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $45,833, and the median income for a family is $57,885. Males have a median income of $41,833 versus $29,488 for females. The per capita income for the village is $24,100. 4.7% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 4.9% of those under the age of 18 and 3.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
