Jefferson County is a county located in the state of Mississippi. As of 2000, the population is 9,740. Its county seat is Fayette6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,365 km² (527 mi²). 1,345 km² (519 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.48% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 9,740 people, 3,308 households, and 2,338 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (19/mi²). There are 3,819 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (7/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 13.06% White, 86.49% Black or African American, 0.08% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.02% from other races, and 0.24% from two or more races. 0.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race. Jefferson County has the highest percentage of black residents out of all U.S. counties.

There are 3,308 households out of which 36.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.00% are married couples living together, 28.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 27.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.75 and the average family size is 3.36.

In the county the population is spread out with 28.80% under the age of 18, 12.10% from 18 to 24, 28.50% from 25 to 44, 19.60% from 45 to 64, and 10.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 32 years. For every 100 females there are 99.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 99.00 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $18,447, and the median income for a family is $23,188. Males have a median income of $25,726 versus $18,000 for females. The per capita income for the county is $9,709. 36.00% of the population and 32.50% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 46.00% of those under the age of 18 and 34.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
