Jones County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 1,193. Its county seat is Murdo6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,517 km² (972 mi²). 2,514 km² (971 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.12% water.

Townships

The county is divided into thirteen townships: Buffalo, Draper, Dunkel, Grandview, Kolls, Morgan, Mullen, Mussman, Okaton, Scovil, South Creek, Williams Creek, and Zickrick; and four areas of unorganized territory: Central Jones, North Jones, Rich Valley, and Westover.

The racial makeup of the county is 95.81% White, 0.00% Black or African American, 2.43% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.51% from two or more races. 0.34% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 509 households out of which 29.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.20% are married couples living together, 7.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.60% are non-families. 33.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.98.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.20% under the age of 18, 6.20% from 18 to 24, 25.50% from 25 to 44, 23.90% from 45 to 64, and 18.20% who are 65 years of age or older.
