Murdo is a city located in Jones County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 612. It is the county seat of Jones CountyTemplate:GR. Murdo is named for Murdo MacKenzie, a Texas cattleman.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²). 1.6 km² (0.6 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Murdo has been assigned the ZIP code 57559 and the FIPS place code 44260.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 612 people, 271 households, and 160 families residing in the city. The population density is 375.1/km² (964.5/mi²). There are 315 housing units at an average density of 193.1/km² (496.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.92% White, 0.00% African American, 2.94% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.00% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 0.49% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 271 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.6% are married couples living together, 11.4% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% are non-families. 37.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 19.2% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.26 and the average family size is 2.99.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 21.9% from 45 to 64, and 19.3% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 85.9 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,104, and the median income for a family is $40,000. Males have a median income of $24,196 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,008. 12.1% of the population and 10.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.3% of those under the age of 18 and 11.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
