According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.3 km² (9.0 mi²). 23.3 km² (9.0 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water. The water supply is a natural aquifer.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 24,675 people, 8,828 households, and 3,601 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,058.6/km² (2,740.8/mi²). There are 9,398 housing units at an average density of 403.2/km² (1,043.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 83.10% White, 2.40% African American, 0.67% Native American, 8.48% Asian, 0.38% Pacific Islander, 1.58% from other races, and 3.40% from two or more races. 3.86% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,828 households out of which 20.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 33.0% are married couples living together, 5.8% have a female householder with no husband present, and 59.2% are non-families. 31.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 3.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.23 and the average family size is 2.87.

The age distribution, which is dominated by the presence of WSU, is: 13.1% under the age of 18, 49.4% from 18 to 24, 22.8% from 25 to 44, 10.3% from 45 to 64, and 4.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 22 years, which is also typical of a university town. For every 100 females there are 104.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 104.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $20,652, and the median income for a family is $46,165. Males have a median income of $36,743 versus $29,192 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,448. 37.5% of the population and 15.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.0% of those under the age of 18 and 3.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line. However, traditional poverty measures can be misleading when applied to communities primarily populated by college students.

WSU

Pullman, Washington is the home town of the state university of Washington State University, or WSU. WSU is a Division 1 school. They are part of the Pac 10 Conference and field teams in many sports, both mens and womens. Academically, WSU is well known for its pharmacy, veterinary , and communications school. Its communication school counts some distinguished alumni such as the journalist Edward R. Murrow and the sportscaster Keith Jackson. Popular campus locations include the creamery known as Ferdinands, the CUB (student union) and "The Coug".

WSU's athletic teams are known as the Cougars and their mascot is a Cougar named "Butch". The keeping of a live Cougar mascot was discontinued in the 1970s.
